Summer at Galltfaenan Hall: Animals and Long Days

Life At Our Home

Summer is the season Galltfaenan Hall was built for. The long drive up to the hall is green on both sides, the walled garden is at its fullest, and the fields around us are full of the animals our residents have come to know by name. This is what a summer here actually looks like.

Mornings in the Garden

Our residents help tend the vegetable patch that sits inside the walled garden, and much of what they grow ends up on the plate later that day. In summer that means real, visible reward for the work: runner beans coming in, salad leaves cut fresh, the first of the soft fruit. For people who have spent time in settings where meals arrive from nowhere in particular, growing your own dinner is a small thing that matters a great deal.

There is something quietly therapeutic about a summer morning spent outside with your hands in the soil, with no pressure and no clock to watch. That is deliberate. It is part of how we think about a good day here.

Life Among the Animals

Galltfaenan Hall shares its grounds with a working farmyard: alpacas, goats, ducks, chickens and geese all live alongside the people who call this place home. In summer, when the days are long and the grounds are at their best, residents spend real time with the animals, feeding them, watching them, simply being near them.

People underestimate what an animal can do that a person cannot. There is no expectation in it. An alpaca does not need you to explain yourself. For some of our residents, especially those who find conversation difficult or draining, ten minutes with the goats can do more for their afternoon than any amount of talking. We built that into life here on purpose, not as an extra, but as part of how people settle.

Full Days, Real Activities

Summer at Galltfaenan Hall is a busy season. Alongside the day to day rhythm of the gardens and the farmyard, our residents take part in:

  • Theatre and cinema trips
  • Community outings and local visits
  • Sports therapy sessions, often held outdoors while the weather allows
  • Holidays away, a highlight of the year for many residents

Every resident has staff who knows them well enough to shape these activities around what they actually enjoy, rather than a generic timetable. Some residents want to be out every day. Others prefer the quiet of the garden. Both are entirely welcome.

A Landscape Built for Long Evenings

Being set in the Vale of Clwyd, with the Clwydian Range rising to the east, means summer evenings here stretch out properly. There is no traffic noise competing with the birdsong, no street lighting to rush the dusk along. Residents and staff who have been here for years will tell you the same thing: the light in July and August, over the fields towards Denbigh and Henllan, is one of the quiet pleasures of the job and of living here.

Community and Connection

Summer also brings us closer to the wider community around Trefnant and the Vale of Clwyd. Our strong links with local groups mean residents take part in community activities that reflect the broad mix of people who live here, and both English and Welsh are spoken across the home and in the community around us.

Come and See Summer for Yourself

Photographs and descriptions only go so far. If you are a family member, a social worker or a commissioner curious about what life at Galltfaenan Hall really looks like in summer, come and visit. Walk the garden, meet the animals, and see for yourself why so many people who arrive here choose to stay.
